Project Description

PAT CASH

Wimbledon Champion, Pat Cash, is an Australian former professional tennis player, who has been described as one of the greatest net players of all time. Cash debuted in the tennis world in the early 1980s, ranked the No. 1 junior player in the world in 1981, turned professional in 1982, winning his first top-level singles title the same year in Melbourne, and became the youngest player (aged 17) to play in a Davis Cup final in 1983, and winning. In 1988, Pat reached a career-high ATP in singles (May), and doubles (August), as world No. 4, and 6 respectively, always wearing his black-and-white checked headband. After his straight sets victory against the world No. 1, Ivan Lendl in the men’s single final at Wimbledon 1987, Cash originated the tradition of climbing into the stands and up to the player’s box at Centre Court to celebrate, a tradition which has been followed by several champions ever since. Pat only dropped one set during the entire tournament. In 1990, in Hong Kong, he won his last top-level singles title, and six years later, he won his last doubles title at Pinehurst with Pat Rafter. Considered one of the great names in tennis, Pat Cash was inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame in 2003, and inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2005.
